Salary hike calculator: what your raise adds in hand

Turn a hike on your CTC into the change in your monthly in-hand salary for FY 2026-27, with income tax, PF and professional tax for your state, and see where the extra money goes.

A hike is quoted on your CTC, but what you feel is the change in your monthly in-hand pay. The two are rarely the same: income tax, provident fund and the ₹12 lakh rebate all move between them. Enter your current CTC and the hike, or the new CTC from your offer letter.

Why your in-hand rise is not your hike

  • Up to about ₹12 lakh, in-hand rises a little faster than CTC. There is no income tax yet, and PF at the statutory ceiling and professional tax stay the same as your pay grows. A 20% hike on ₹10 L raises in-hand pay by 21.3%.
  • Crossing ₹12 lakh of taxable income ends the rebate. Above the limit the full slab tax applies, eased only at first by marginal relief, so a raise across it loses a large share to tax. A 20% hike on ₹12 L raises in-hand pay by only 14.1%.
  • Above ₹50 lakh, surcharge starts. A 10% hike on ₹50 L raises in-hand pay by 5.7%, because the 10% surcharge begins once taxable income passes ₹50 lakh.
  • PF and gratuity grow with Basic. Part of every raise goes into your provident fund and the gratuity provision. That money is still yours, just not in this month's salary.

When a raise leaves you with less

Just above ₹12 lakh of taxable income, the rebate tapers off rather than stopping dead: your tax is capped at the income above the limit. The 4% cess is still charged on top, so inside this band each extra rupee of income costs slightly more than a rupee in tax.

With the standard structure, a raise of ₹50,000 from ₹13.4 L to ₹13.9 L adds ₹50,750 of income tax and leaves you ₹1,952 a year worse off. Past the band, a raise is taxed at the ordinary slab rates again and in-hand pay climbs normally.

If a raise would land you in this band, it is worth asking payroll whether part of it can be paid as an employer contribution to NPS, which the new regime still lets you deduct (section 124), or simply negotiating a raise large enough to clear it. The marginal relief guide shows the band in detail.
