Who is exempt
- We have not confirmed this state’s list of exempt employees from an official source. Your employer’s payroll team will know.
Where these figures come from
Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act 1998 (as amended in 2022), sections 117-B and 117-C, at the Greater Chennai Corporation rates in its notice of 6 March 2025.
Only Greater Chennai Corporation rates are verified. Other corporations, municipalities and panchayats in Tamil Nadu set their own, and the state publishes no single table. Employers choose the month for each half-year’s deduction; our examples show September and March.
Does it reduce your income tax?
Only in the old regime. Professional tax is deductible from salary under section 19(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, and section 202(2) removes that deduction for anyone taxed under the new regime.
