Who is exempt

  • We have not confirmed this state’s list of exempt employees from an official source. Your employer’s payroll team will know.

Where these figures come from

Puducherry Municipalities Act 1973 and Puducherry Village and Commune Panchayats Act 1973, as amended in 2017, with the rates set out in Finance Department G.O.Ms.No.24/F3/2017 of 4 July 2017.

The 2017 amendments set these as minimum rates, so a local body may charge more. Government employees have the tax recovered quarterly; our examples show each half-year’s tax in September and March.

Does it reduce your income tax?

Only in the old regime. Professional tax is deductible from salary under section 19(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, and section 202(2) removes that deduction for anyone taxed under the new regime.
